Early Christian Writings
The writings in this volume cast a glimmer of light upon the emerging traditions and organization of the infant Catholic Church, during a time of recurring persecutions and clandestine growth. It contains letters and writings from a group known as the Apostolic Fathers, several of whom were disciples of the Apostles. They provide first-hand accounts of the early Church, her beliefs and practices.
Included are the first Epistle of Pope Clement of Rome, the Epistle of Polycarp (disciple of St. John), the Epistle of Barnabas, the Epistle of Diognetus, the Didache (the Teachings of the Apostles), the martyrdom of Polycarp and the seven letters written by Ignatius of Antioch, as he travelled to Rome in chains for his own martyrdom.
