Miraculous Medal - Silver Oxide
Obverse depicts Our Lady of Grace standing upon a globe, crushing the head of a serpent ... satan ... beneath her feet (Douay-Rheims Bilbe: Genesis 3:15 ... "... she shall crush thy head and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel" ... all other bible translations have been Protestantized). Encircling Our Lady's image is the prayer, "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee."
The reverse depicts a large "M" (for Mary) surmounted by a cross (for Jesus) with two flaming hearts beneath. Jesus's heart is encircled in thorns, while Mary's is pierced by a sword (Luke 2:35 ... the prophecy of Simeon ... "And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.") All is surrounded by 12 Stars, recalling the vision of Saint John (Apocalypse 12:1, ... “a great sign appeared in heavens, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars.”)
This medal was given to St. Catherine Labouré by Our Lady, herself, in 1830. It's official title is the Medal of the Immaculate Conception (referring to the fact that Mary was conceived in the womb of St. Ann without stain of original sin, precisely so that she would be a worthy vessel to bear the God-man). In 1830, this dogma of the Immaculate Conception had not yet been proclaimed by the Church. The medal was quickly dubbed the Miraculous Medal, because of the countless miracles and instantaneous conversions which occurred in the lives of people who carried or had devotion to the medal and to the prayer inscribed on it.
Everyone should wear a Miraculous Medal (blessed by a holy priest) and have devotion to Mary. Mary always protects her children.
Medal may be purchased alone or with neck chain. If you can't afford a chain, wear it on a cord or ribbon. We also carry sterling silver or 14 karat gold Miraculous Medals.
