Martin was born in Lima, Peru out of wedlock, the son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed African slave. He trained in the healing arts and barbering. He became a Third Order Lay Dominican Brother and is known to have bilocated, and performed many instantaneous miraculous cures. He had extraordinary powers over animals ... they listened to him and did as he said. He was the friend of St. Rose of Lima. Twenty-five years after his death in 1639, his body was exhumed and found to be incorrupt. It gave off a beautiful fragrance.
